P!NK
Alecia Beth Moore, known in the music world as Pink, was born on September 8, 1979 in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Pink is known as a singer-songwriter whose popularity flourished in 2000.Pink had always aspired to
be a rock star, and was even part of a band in high school called “Middle
Ground.” Pink was always singing around the house, but because of her
asthma her doctor encouraged her to start taking singing lessons so she
could learn to breathe from her lower abdomen instead of her chest. She
learned this technique and did not let being asthmatic stand in her way to
fame. At only 14 years old she began performing in clubs in Philadelphia,
and at 16 she joined an R&B trio called “Choice.” Unlike her high
school band, “Middle Ground,” “Choice” took off and signed with
LaFace Records and even recorded a song for the 1996 soundtrack Kazaam.
However, when “Choice” decided to go their separate ways, Pink stayed
with LaFace Records as a solo act under the name Pink.
Her wish was granted when she got rid of her pink hair, and started working on her second album M!ssundaztood. She wrote most of the tracks with vocalist Linda Perry, and released the album in November 2001. “Get the Party Started” was the top hit single off the album along with three other popular singles, “Don't Let Me Get Me,” “Just Like a Pill,” and “Family Portrait.” “Get the Party Started” won “Best Female Video” and “Best Dance Video” at the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards and was even nominated at the 2003 Grammy Awards for “Best Pop Vocal Album” and “Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.” M!ssundaztood reached gold or platinum status in over twenty countries, and as of 2007 is her best selling album yet.
Pink's third album Try This did not do so well, however. Try This was released in November 2003, and although it reached the top ten on album charts in the U.S., Canada, UK and Australia, sales were far from those of M!ssundaztood. Try This did sell 720,000 copies in the U.S. and three million worldwide, but her singles “Trouble” and “God is a DJ” did not make it onto the U.S. top forty.
Pink did not let her third album get her down. In April 2006 she wrote songs for, and released her fourth album I'm Not Dead to prove that her voice was still very much alive, and that she was not going anywhere. Fortunately the public liked her message, and I'm Not Dead reached the top ten in the U.S. Her hit single “U + Ur Hand” helped I'm Not Dead become Pink's second biggest seller worldwide since M!ssundaztood. Her other top single “Stupid Girls” was Pink's biggest U.S. hit since 2002 and even earned her a Grammy nomination for “Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.” This controversial song and video mocked celebrities such as Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan and won Pink “Best Pop Video” at the MTV Video Music Awards.
Pink's candid lyrics and
edgy persona have made her one of the most unique artists of her time. She
is one of the few singers that has stayed true to herself, and crossed
boundaries to make sure her voice was heard. Her success continues to
thrive as she tours the world and produces album after album, letting the
world know that she's here to stay.
