Norah Jones

droppedImage.pict Her innate musical talent was apparent in her teenage years and even won her the Downbeat Student Music Award for Best Jazz Vocalist, twice, as well as Best Original Composition during her high school career. Jones pursued her special talent through college by majoring in jazz piano at the University of North Texas. However, she only stayed at the University for 2 years before packing up and moving to New York City.

Jones started out as a lounge singer before she made it as a famous recording artist. Before going solo, Jones collaborated with different artists and bands such as Wax Poetic and the Peter Malick Group. Jones was immediately recognized for her soulful, breathtaking vocals, which managed to convey an old-fashion tone in such a modern, innovative way. It seemed that the world was ready for a new and fresh mellow sound; her first debut album Come Away With Me sold over 20 million copies. Her hit single off the album, “Don't Know Why” peaked at number 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and on the Top 40 Adult Recurrents in 2003. Released in February 2002, Come Away With Me won Jones 4 Grammies for Album on the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist in 2003, making Jones the second artist ever to win all 4 awards in 1 year.

Thrilled, yet shocked by the amount of praise and popularity she was receiving as a brand new artist, Jones continued making music and released her second album, Feels Like Home in February 2004. Although she was known for her jazzy tracks, Jones decided to head toward more of a country sound for her second album. Feels Like Home became the highest-selling album in the history of Blue Note Records when it sold over a million copies within its first week. The album eventually sold over 10 million copies  and won Jones Record of the Year, as well as Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for her song “Sunrise” at the 2005 Grammy Awards. She also received a Grammy for “Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals” for her collaboration with Ray Charles on the song “Here We Go Again.” Time magazine named Jones one of the 100 most influential people of 2004.

Blue Note Records released Jones's third album, Not Too Late in January 2007. This was the first album that Jones had either wrote or co-wrote every single song on it. She described this album as a much darker album than her previous albums, but regardless, Not Too Late reached number 1 on the United World Chart and sold over 720,000 copies in its first week. Not Too Late is certified gold or platinum in over 20 countries as of February 2007, and has sold more than 3 million copies worldwide. The hit single off the album entitled, “Thinking About You,” was Jones's first single to place on the U.S. Hot 100 since her first single “Don't Know Why.”

Jones has really contributed to the music world by turning an outdated genre of music into a hip, and young one, that people of all ages can relate to and enjoy. She is not only a singer, but also a songwriter, pianist, and guitarist who has not only proven herself worthy of competing with other contemporary artists, but also has exceeded the musical boundaries that confine many other music artists today.
