Carrie Underwood
Carrie Underwood made American
Idol history when she beat out Bo Bice in season four and became the
first pop country music singer to win.
It is no surprise that this young
blonde bombshell took home the title in 2005, because from a young age,
Underwood always loved to sing and even sang on a regular basis at her
Baptist church in Checotah, Oklahoma. At the age of 13, her manager tried
to get her a recording contract with Capital Records. Unfortunately, it
was not the time for Underwood's big break.
However, patience is a
virtue, and it was well worth the wait when Carrie was crowned the American
Idol. Right after the show ended she began working on her debut album
entitled, Some Hearts. The album was released November 2005 and
sold over 315,000 copies in its first week. Sales soared as the album was
eventually certified sextuple Platinum by the RIAA, and quickly became the
fastest, most popular selling debut country album since 1991. Her most
popular hits off Some Hearts include “Jesus, Take the Wheel,”
“Don't Forget to Remember Me,” and “Before He Cheats.”
On May 23, 2006, Underwood
ended up winning Best New Female Vocalist and Single of the year for
“Jesus, Take the Wheel” at the ACM Awards. She also won Breakthrough
Artist of the Year at the American Music Awards, as well as another 5
awards (Album of the Year, Top 200 Female Artist of the Year, Female
Country Artist, New Country Artist, and Country Album of the year) at the
2006 Billboard Music Awards.
Underwood just keeps releasing hit singles, such as her most recent one, “Wasted,” and is in the midst of working on her second album. She helped write a couple of songs on her new album, and it should be released in November of 2007. Move over Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood is here to stay as possibly the most successful American Idol yet.
