| Nickelback’s Fifth Adrenaline Fueled Foray | ||||
![]() Get "Photograph", "Savin' Me" and "Faraway", the standout tracks from Nickelback's new album, All The Right Reasons. |
Canadian rockers Nickelback are straight to the point, both lyrically and musically these musicians are not famous for their complex musical arrangements or poetic muscle. Instead, they produce solid rock songs, following a simple blueprint that works
works in creating expressive and emotive rock anthems, sing-a-long friendly rock ballads that have captured a substantial fan base. On their fifth effort, All The Right Reasons, they continue using this time-tested formula. Their sound inhabits the post-grunge vein with some blues undertones infused here and there. Adrenaline fueled guitar chords pervade the album, driving rhythms and drum beats produce an energetic feeling. The vocals of lead singer Chad Kroeger achieves a good synergy with the hard-edged rock sound. The album deals with the typical rock and roll themes including: love, lust, and loss. Heavy on cliché, Kroeger’s lyrics don’t say anything new, a rehash of old ideas attractively repackaged in a glossy rock facade. Nevertheless, the album succeeds in generating a pleasing and easy to digest sound, an explanation of their wide success. On “Photograph” the first single from the album, Kroeger digs up his memories of the past, reminiscent and sentimental it is vivid and evocative of times gone by. “Savin’ Me” is a down-tempo song about redemption, and “Faraway” is a heartfelt rock ballad. Maturity and social awareness as well as moral ideals have made their way into their music. On “If Everyone Cared” Kroeger creates a vision of a utopian world laced with religious references. Nickelback delivers another solid rock effort that will certainly prompt countless ‘steering wheel’ sing-a-longs. | John Mayer Succeeds On New Live CD | ||||
Get "Daughters" and "Somethings Missing " the standout tracks from John Mayer's new album, Try!. |
The title of the first song on Try!, the new live CD from John Mayer Trio, is “Who Did You Think I Was”, and it’s a fair question. If your John Mayer is the sensitive, poppy singer/songwriter responsible for making female hearts melt at the sound of “No Such Thing” and “Your Body Is A Wonderland,” you’re in for quite a shock. “Try! lets Mayer’s other side—his rock & roll side—take center stage. Sometimes he’s channeling the Jimi Hendrix Experience, sometimes Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble, sometimes even Buddy Guy—but he never crosses the line into parody or rip-off. The young man’s got the instrumental and vocal chops, plus the passion to make it all work. In a lot of ways, Try! is the 2005 version of a late ‘60’s live rock album, when guitar legends like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck fronted power trios that mixed soul, funk and blues into a style that came to be known as “hard rock.” The rhythm section (bassist Pino Palladino and drummer Steve Jordan) plays like a direct descendant of those ensembles and lays down a solid groove on every song, giving Mayer the strong backing he needs in order to create his distinctive rhythm/lead guitar style. His vocals, always distinctive, are powerful and evocative throughout. Mayer has come up with a good batch of new material for this CD. There’s the persistent funk of the aforementioned “Who Did You Think I Was”, a faithful rendition of the Hendrix rocker, “Wait Until Tomorrow”, the blues-soaked “Out Of My Mind” and the soulful ballad, “Gravity”. Long-time fans will be more than pleased by the renditions of two Mayer favorites, “Daughters” and “Something’s Missing.” |
