Kelly
Clarkson Thankfully upon seeing the movie Jaws,
Kelly Clarkson abandoned her childhood dream to become a marine
biologist. Instead, she became a household name when her soulful voice
captured the hearts and minds of millions when she was voted the American
Idol in September of 2002. Upon graduation, Kelly solidified her commitment to music by moving to Los Angeles and working |

numerous minimum-wage jobs as she funded the creation of a demo tape and attempted to make herself known in Hollywood. Her brief time in Hollywood was tragically cut short as her apartment burned down, car was towed and best friend in the industry (Gerry Goffin) passed away. Both emotionally and financially drained, Kelly moved back to Burleson and took a minimum wage job at the local movie theater. It was her best friend Jessica who presented her with paperwork for American Idol, FOX Television's national talent search competition/television show. Kelly knew nothing about it, “I went and tried out for fun and here I am!” After dozens of auditions, in which she sang her own renditions of songs such as R. Kelly's “I Believe I Can Fly” and Aretha Franklin's “Respect,” Clarkson was voted to be America’s first “Idol” on September 4, 2002. On October 5th, 2002, Kelly’s debut single, “A Moment
Like This,” shot straight from 58 (debuted here) to number 1 on the Billboard
charts, eclipsing the thirty-eight-year record of “biggest leap to No. 1,”
previously held by the Beatles' “Can't Buy Me Love,” which went from number
27 to number 1 in after its debut in 1964. Clarkson's self-titled full-length
album was released in spring of 2003, just in time to coincide with the second
season of American Idol and right before the American Idol movie, From
Justin to Kelly. Kelly Clarkson captivated the hearts of many adoring fans in that memorable summer of 2002. But even with her number 1 single and successful album, it is too early to tell whether or not Clarkson will have a career reminiscent of the Beatles, whose record she eclipsed, or be another one hit wonder that fades into obscurity after their first album. |
