Gwen Stefani Gwen Stefani moved into the music spotlight in 1987
as the sexy lead singer for the band No Doubt. One of her biggest hits in
the '90s with the ska-punk and new wave fashion cross group was the single
“Don't Speak,” featured on No Doubt's Grammy nominated third album Tragic Kingdom. The video for “Don't Speak,” a play on inner
jealousy in a band, accumulated plenty of play on MTV, and increased the
bands fan base and popularity. Stefani was born and raised in the glittering sunshine of Southern California. When her brother Eric Stefani and friend, singer John Spence, put together a new band called No Doubt in 1987, Gwen was brought in as co-singer with Spence. |

Later that year, John ended his life, leaving a saddened Gwen to step up to the microphone alone. During those first hard years Gwen, along with guitarist Tom Dumont, drummer Adrian Young, and bassist Tony Kanal, played gigs wherever they could and, at the same time, held part-time jobs or finished school. In 1992, after signing with Interscope Records, No Doubt released its self-titled debut album. The album flopped and Interscope wouldn't agree to back a second. Refusing to give in, even though her brother Eric left, Gwen and the other band members worked hard to put up money of their own to record a follow-up album called The Beacon Street Collection in 1995. Soon she and the band had Interscope's full attention again, and were working on another album, Tragic Kingdom. The old saying about the third time being the charm, proved true. The Grammy nominated album hit number one on the Billboard charts, and three of its singles (“Spiderwebs,” “Just a Girl,” and “Don’t Speak”) achieved success on the charts. Another full-length album, Return of Saturn, was released in 2000 but the band broke up shortly after the release due to internal friction. After disappearing into the ranks of “has-beens” for four years, Gwen roared back with her solo debut Love. Angel. Music. Baby. in 2004. With the assistance of singles such as “Holla Back Girl” (Neptunes feat.) and “Bubble Pop Electric” (Outkast feat.), Her solo debut was immensely successful, quickly achieving platinum status. “Holla Back Girl” also received high marks on the billboard charts. Admittedly different from the music that she created with No Doubt, as Gwen said, “After 17 years you have to try something different.” With the success of her solo attempt, the multi-talented Stefani has again broken the barriers between rock, rap, and pop; proving to the world that she is one of the premier female vocalists of the nineties and the new millennium. |
